Desktop0.6.2

Multi-Language Support, Turbo Export & Focus Mode

Cap 0.6.2 is available in seven languages, adds Turbo export for MP4 exports up to 2.8x faster, and brings Focus mode for recording a single window. The picker and main window have a redesigned, cohesive look across macOS, Windows and Linux, and the release includes more than 200 fixes and performance improvements.

Show release notes

Features

  • Multi-language support - Cap is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, German and Hindi. It follows your system language, or pick one in Settings → General → Language. The app switches straight away, with no restart.
  • Turbo export - A new toggle on the export page uses every core to finish MP4 exports 2-2.8x faster.
  • Focus mode - On macOS and Windows, record a window by itself. Other windows, even ones on top of it, stay out of the video, and the recording follows the window if it moves. Turn on Center on screen to move the window to the middle while you record; it goes back where it was afterwards. Set your default in Settings → General → Window capture style.
  • Redesigned picker and main window - The recording picker, main window, recordings library and capture cards have a cohesive new design that looks the same on macOS, Windows and Linux.
  • Resize a window before recording - In the window picker, the size chip resizes the picked window to 21:9, 16:9, 16:10, 4:3, 1:1 or 9:16, or to 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 4K.
  • Better area picking - One-click chips for Free, 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 and 9:16, with more ratios in a menu, plus Fill and Reset. Lock an area and Cap opens with it next time. Edges snap to windows and the menu bar, Dock or taskbar (hold Command or Ctrl to turn snapping off). Click without dragging to fit the area to the window under the cursor, nudge it with the arrow keys and press Return to start.
  • Clip transitions - Add a crossfade or fade through black between clips from the clip menu, from 0.25 to 1.5 seconds. Transitions show on the timeline.
  • Copy and paste text styles - Right-click a text segment on the timeline to copy its style and paste it onto another.
  • Custom domain links - Instant recordings, Studio uploads and screenshot shares now copy links on your team's verified custom domain.
  • macOS menus - The app menu gains Open File, Open Recent, Import Media, Check for Update and a full Help menu. The menu bar icon has a new mode picker.
  • Random project names - Use {random} or {random:N} in project name templates.

Recording fixes

  • Start cue timing - The start sound plays only once capture is ready, so the opening of a recording is never lost. An audio output that can't play the cue no longer delays the start by 1.5 s.
  • Microphone during calls - Cap detects when a VoIP call takes over the microphone instead of quietly recording silence.
  • Camera size changes - On macOS, a webcam that switches resolution mid-recording keeps recording instead of freezing.
  • External and slow drives - Recordings on exFAT drives (SD cards, most USB sticks) now finish and recover. macOS recordings survive storage stalls without losing video or audio.
  • Audio quality - Mic audio resampled from 44.1 kHz no longer drifts against the video. 192 kHz interfaces keep their full range in exports. Stopping while paused no longer adds silence to the end.
  • Instant recordings - Crashed Instant recordings finish uploading after relaunch, and failed or cancelled starts no longer leave an empty cap stuck at "Uploading 0%".
  • Recording bar - The space above the recording controls can be clicked again while recording.
  • Window picker - Always-on-top windows such as the iOS Simulator now appear on macOS. The camera bubble stays above the picker.
  • Recovery - Recordings with an empty leftover segment folder can be recovered. The editor's live preview is back while a Studio recording is prepared.
  • Fractional scaling - Area recordings at scales like 175% keep their exact size.

Editing and export fixes

  • Manual captions - Captions set to Manual position can be dragged into place.
  • Captions - Generating captions only transcribes the parts of the timeline you kept. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hindi captions use Whisper so the chosen language is respected. Editing caption text keeps word timings in order. Interrupted model downloads are no longer mistaken for installed models.
  • Presets - Applying a preset no longer replaces a recording's caption text or resets its text styles.
  • Undo and redo - Drags that end where they started, unchanged timing fields and interrupted canvas drags no longer clear redo or skip an undo.
  • Timeline - New and resized segments stay inside their gap. Waveforms show on clips at any speed. Mask animations stay in place when splitting or trimming. The Zoom lane accepts new zooms while the Generate prompt shows. Times past an hour show hours.
  • Auto zoom and cursor - Auto zoom ignores cursor movement in cut sections. Smoothed cursors reach where the mouse stopped, and text cursors confirmed by a click keep their shape.
  • Layout - Portrait videos fill a vertical project. The camera lays out from each clip's own size. The camera size during zoom slider works again.
  • Playback - Seeking to the very end shows the final frame. Zooming the timeline keeps an offscreen playhead in view. Editor shortcuts work again after clicking the preview.
  • Audio - Overlapping music tracks no longer clip depending on track order. Short cuts with Studio Sound export correctly.
  • Text - Titles placed after the last clip no longer extend the video. Text that fits in the editor no longer wraps in 4K exports.
  • Exports - Failed or cancelled MOV exports leave an existing file untouched. Suggested file names are always valid. Exports fall back to software encoding when VideoToolbox fails, and to another GPU when the first can't start.
  • Screenshots - Area screenshots start with an empty selection, annotations past the edge are kept in exports, and long window titles no longer stop a save.
  • Sharing - Share progress counts only uploaded parts, so it no longer sits at 99%. Cancelling a share as it finishes no longer copies the link. Google Drive uploads no longer fail on chunk size.
  • Project safety - Project saves are flushed to disk before replacing the old file, so a crash can't leave an empty project.

App fixes

  • Library - Recordings in earlier recordings folders stay in the library after changing folders. Deleting a recording updates every window and the tray. Recordings with damaged upload state can be deleted. Library buttons always act on the right recording.
  • Automations - A delete rule waits for every upload rule on the same trigger to finish.
  • Crash reports - Crashes now leave a record that is included when you send logs from Settings → Feedback.
  • GPU resets - Sleep, GPU switches and driver resets no longer crash the editor or exports.
  • Camera window - The camera preview reopens fully on screen.
  • Displays - Windows are placed correctly on displays above or below the main display.
  • Sign-in - Signing out and back in no longer gets undone by a stale request. Custom server URLs are fully validated.

Platform fixes

  • macOS - No more double traffic lights at launch. Key overlays show Option and right Command. The MacBook notch setting applies to new Studio recordings.
  • Windows - Camera background blur no longer crashes when DirectML is missing, and is turned off after a crash so Cap can relaunch. Each Studio recording no longer keeps a second full copy of its media. Cap explains why screen capture couldn't start. Ctrl editing shortcuts work in text fields. Show in folder and Import desktop background work.
  • Linux - Recording starts and stops on GNOME 50 and Hyprland, and shows visible controls when there is no tray or Stop shortcut. Screen capture works in the AppImage on NixOS and on niri. Confirmations and alerts appear without zenity. Screenshot permission prompts appear on GNOME Wayland, and relaunching Cap brings its window forward. Cap falls back to X11 when no Wayland compositor is running. Image, wallpaper and audio pickers work. System audio is recorded in stereo. X11 recordings respect the resolution limit, partly visible windows stay selectable, and the picker sizes correctly at high DPI.

CLI

  • Batch export - cap export accepts several projects at once.
  • More output - cap project validate and inspect report durationSeconds, and cap --version reports the real Cap version.
  • Fixes - cap recordings list finds recordings in custom storage folders, uploads work without --name, cap jobs wait --timeout is enforced, and project config commands reject folders that aren't recordings.

Performance

  • Faster Instant links - After you stop, the upload finishes about 40% sooner. A 30-minute recording makes 51 upload signing requests instead of 949.
  • Linux hardware encoding - AMD and Intel GPUs now record and export with VA-API hardware H.264 instead of the CPU.
  • Faster editor opening - The first editor open after launch shows its frame right away. Autosaves of long captioned projects no longer block the editor.
  • Smoother editing - Scrubbing backwards on macOS reuses decoded frames, slider edits skip timeline rebuilds, long menus such as the font picker use 9-40x less CPU, and long text fields stay responsive.
  • Faster stops - Studio stop no longer waits for its thumbnail, and the camera preview converts frames off the main thread.
  • Lower CPU - Windows playback no longer busy-waits on every frame. The audio mixer wakes only when audio arrives, the cursor recorder skips key scans when keyboard capture is off, and the picker repaints only when something changes.
  • Picker memory - On macOS, the area picker needs 32 MB of extra graphics memory, down from 74 MB.
  • Screenshots - Pixel packing is 5-6x faster on Apple Silicon. Pixelate masks are 23-34x faster and blur masks 4-12x faster.
  • Lighter media work - Camera frames are shared instead of copied, GIF exports skip a full copy per frame, and software decoding and conversion use AVX2 on x86 CPUs.

Desktop0.6.1

Fully Native Cap, Faster Everything & Hundreds of Fixes

Cap is now a fully native app. Compared with the Tauri app, editor playback uses 77% less CPU and 88% less memory, recording uses 46% less CPU and 87% less memory, and Linux downloads are up to 57% smaller. 0.6.1 also brings faster exports and more than 180 fixes and improvements across recording, editing and export.

Show release notes

The native app

  • Native Cap is now the only Cap - The GPUI app replaces the old Tauri app on every platform. 0.6.0 updates in place: recordings, settings and macOS permissions carry over, with nothing to reinstall.
  • Lighter and faster than Tauri - Editor playback holds a steady 60 fps (up from 56) with 77% less CPU and 88% less memory (440 MB vs 3.7 GB). Recording uses 46% less CPU and 87% less memory (256 MB vs 2 GB).
  • Much smaller downloads - Linux packages are less than half their old size (DEB 224 → 97 MB, AppImage 265 → 131 MB), and macOS and Windows downloads are smaller too.
  • Signed native updater - Updates are verified while they download, show progress in Settings and finish with a "Restart to update" prompt. Switching channels cancels any pending update from the old channel.
  • New onboarding - A welcome screen with an animated sky, then a step-by-step permissions checklist. On macOS, a drag-to-grant guide follows System Settings, and Cap relaunches itself when Screen Recording needs it.
  • Native look and feel - Uses the system font (SF Pro on macOS, Segoe UI on Windows), grouped settings, glass capture buttons and Control Center style camera and microphone lists.
  • Editor window placement - On macOS the editor opens at a size that fits your display and reopens where you left it on each display.
  • Reduce Motion - Animations follow the macOS Reduce Motion setting.

Features

  • Shortcuts, rebuilt - Shortcuts are grouped into Screenshots, Recording and While recording, and each row explains what it does. Start Studio and Start Instant recording can now be bound from this page.
  • After-capture choices - Choose what happens after a screenshot (open editor, copy, copy and edit, or do nothing) and after a Studio recording (open editor, show Cap, or do nothing).
  • Better background removal - On macOS, only the main person is kept, so people behind you are removed. Edges are sharper and steadier, and the live preview runs at 720p.
  • Captions for long recordings - Recordings longer than 6m40s can now be captioned with the Recommended model, and long transcriptions run up to 44% faster.
  • Camera and microphone access - The app shows clearly when camera or mic access is missing or pending instead of an endless spinner, and picks the device up again once access is granted.
  • System audio remembered - The system audio toggle keeps its setting between launches.

Recording and sync

  • Audio and video stay in sync - Fixed video drifting ahead of audio after dropped frames at recording start, frames stamped with their processing time instead of their capture time, and dropped audio samples when audio latency improved partway through a recording.
  • Instant mode sync - Microphone, system audio and screen now start together. System audio could start up to 60 ms off, and a slow mic up to a second early.
  • Camera alignment - The camera no longer plays ahead of the screen when it started recording first.
  • Idle-screen frame rate - Studio recordings of mostly static screens keep their real frame rate. Previously, exports dropped frames and sync drifted. Existing recordings are repaired when opened.
  • Steadier camera - Camera frames are kept through brief system stalls, and Windows no longer duplicates camera frames under normal timing jitter.
  • Cursor through slow drives - Cursor, click and key data keep recording when an SD card, external drive or network drive stalls.
  • Crash recovery - Recovered recordings keep their last finished fragment and their track timing. Static screens are flushed every 2 seconds, so a crash can no longer lose 10+ seconds. Footage is recovered after an early muxer restart.
  • 58 crash and hang fixes - A new stress suite found and fixed crashes from mics that send empty buffers or change format during device switches, screen or camera buffers that change size mid-recording, and damaged project files.
  • 5K and 6K displays - Studio recordings on displays over 4096 px wide are scaled by macOS during capture, so they are no longer resized afterwards.

Editing and export fixes

  • True export colors - Exports now use the BT.709 color standard they are tagged with, so backgrounds, captions and overlays match the colors you picked in the editor.
  • Correct frames in playback and export - Fixed decoders that sometimes showed the wrong frame on macOS (including a camera that could run far ahead in long exports), Windows and Linux. Also fixed stale frames in cross-fades and after seeks, and the frame-before-the-requested-one bug.
  • Export under load - Exports keep every frame in order even when the machine is busy.
  • Windows export judder - Exports no longer hold a frame too long and then jump ahead.
  • Smaller macOS exports - macOS exports could come out up to 3x larger than needed. They now use a 2 second keyframe interval and match the size estimate.
  • Captions in exports - Captions that appear in the editor now always appear in exports. Deleting a caption word no longer cuts footage. Unicode captions break correctly.
  • Closing titles - Fullscreen titles placed at the very end of a video now play and export.
  • Audio editing - Changing audio sync offsets updates playback immediately and moves the waveform with them. Trimming the start of an audio track keeps the remaining audio in place.
  • Auto zoom - Auto zooms land at the right time on multi-take, trimmed or speed-changed timelines, and frame an idle cursor before it moves.
  • Mask timing - Mask animations follow clip speed changes.
  • Image backgrounds - Image backgrounds are re-cropped when you change the aspect ratio.
  • Adding clips - Recording or importing a new clip keeps your place on the timeline. Imported videos keep their final frame.
  • Odd-sized videos - Videos with odd widths or heights keep correct colors at the edges.
  • Cross-platform projects - Projects recorded on Windows open on macOS and Linux, keyboard overlays included.
  • MOV and GIF - Full MOV exports from Automations and the CLI include the recording, not just the background. Cancelled GIF exports no longer leave a broken file.

App fixes

  • Global shortcuts - Shortcuts keep working after the first target picker opens. Screenshot shortcuts from another app bring the editor to the front. Recording shortcuts no longer fail on a window that no longer exists.
  • Microphone released - Cap releases the microphone when its main window is hidden, so the mic indicator turns off.
  • Memory - Closing the editor frees its memory (about 100 MB per open before). Fixed a camera blur and background removal leak of up to 1.4 GB per minute on macOS. The caption model no longer holds 2 GB after captions finish.
  • Mac sleep - An open, idle editor no longer keeps your Mac from sleeping.
  • Sign-in - Sign-in completes even when the browser responds slowly. Only one sign-in runs at a time, and signing out stays signed out.
  • Screen Recording permission - Stale permission grants after an update are detected, so Cap guides you through granting again instead of failing to record.
  • Instant uploads - Live uploads survive brief network failures, and quitting Cap no longer uses up upload retries.
  • Settings saves - Saving settings at the same moment as a background update no longer loses a change.
  • Touch Bar Macs - Fixed a crash when starting a recording on Intel MacBook Pros with a Touch Bar.
  • No startup flash - The main window no longer flashes before onboarding on first launch.
  • Windows - The ✕ button closes to the tray and releases the camera. Launching Cap again brings the running window back. Restarting or shutting down no longer triggers an "exited unexpectedly" warning. Overlays and recording controls now appear on the correct monitor when displays use different scaling. Updating from 0.6.0 asks you to close the old native app instead of failing.
  • Linux - Studio export and editor audio work with comma-decimal locales such as pt_BR. The tray can stop a recording when Wayland global shortcuts are unavailable (GNOME 50). Packages declare their glibc 2.39 requirement instead of failing on launch.
  • CLI - cap record --mode instant uses a start gate for proper sync and no longer locks the camera on macOS. --json returns JSON for validation errors.

Performance

  • Faster exports - macOS hardware exports are 18–27% faster, with about 11% less CPU. Export audio is encoded on its own thread (with AudioToolbox on macOS). ProRes MOV exports use every core, about 4x faster.
  • Windows speed - Editor playback decoding is about 3x faster, 1080p60 exports are 23% faster, and recording uses about 20% less CPU.
  • Linux speed - X11 recording at 1080p reaches about 59 fps (from 41). Instant camera overlays render 4–9x faster, and video decoding uses multiple threads.
  • Faster editor opening - The first frame of long projects appears up to 3.8x sooner. Recording details are read from file headers, and project files with long transcripts load about 2.5x faster.
  • Smoother editing - Scrubbing, live appearance edits and zoom changes on long recordings no longer slow down as the playhead moves later. Captions render up to 7.6x faster and keyboard overlays 2.8x faster. Long clip lists stay responsive.
  • Faster Studio stop - Finalization checks run in parallel, audio is validated during the remux, and the GPU device is ready before you stop.
  • Camera effects - Background blur and removal use less than half the CPU on macOS.
  • Captions - Preparing captions for long recordings uses hundreds of MB less memory.
  • Imports and screenshots - Video imports are up to 1.9x faster. Screenshots save faster by encoding PNGs on multiple cores. Copying unannotated screenshots is 8x faster, and the first text annotation export is 24x faster.
  • Library - Recordings and Recents load with 80% less scanning in large libraries, tray thumbnails load in 20 ms instead of 1.6 s, and settings thumbnails decode in parallel.
  • Uploads - Multipart uploads reuse connections, and Instant share links are confirmed sooner after you stop.
  • Lower idle CPU - Hidden windows and an idle target picker stop redrawing. The recording bar repaints only when it changes, and the mic meter runs off the main thread. Global shortcuts no longer wake Linux 20 times a second.

MacBook Notch Overlay & Recording Reliability Fixes

This release fixes a rare error that could stop a recording partway through on macOS and Windows, makes pause and resume more robust, extends disk-space protection to every recording mode, and adds an optional MacBook notch overlay to Studio Mode.

Show release notes

Features

  • MacBook notch overlay in Studio Mode - Screen capture records straight through the physical notch, so recordings of a notched MacBook show an unbroken menu bar where you saw a cutout. Studio Mode can now draw the notch back over the recording, in both the editor preview and exports, and it follows your crop, padding, and zoom automatically. New recordings capture the exact notch geometry at record time; for older recordings you can position the overlay by hand.

Fixes

  • Recordings no longer stop mid-way with a writer error on macOS - When screen or microphone capture briefly stalled and then recovered in a burst, two frames could land on the same timestamp and the video writer would fail a few seconds later, ending the recording with an error. Frame timing is now corrected before it reaches the writer, so the recording continues. This affected instant, studio, and camera recordings, and was most likely with USB microphones whose capture clock can stall.
  • The same timing issue fixed for instant recordings on Windows - Frames arriving in a burst could collide on a single timestamp tick and be rejected by the recorder. Timestamps are now kept strictly increasing, and a stuck capture clock is surfaced in logs instead of failing silently.
  • Pause and resume reliability on macOS - Pausing a recording could occasionally produce overlapping frame timings that made the writer fail sporadically after resume. Recordings now survive repeated pause and resume cycles, including stopping while paused.
  • Disk-space protection for every recording mode - Previously only instant recordings checked disk space. Every mode, including the camera track, now refuses to start without enough free space, warns when space runs low mid-recording, and stops cleanly before the disk fills so your recording is finalized and playable instead of corrupted.
  • Camera recordings survive encoder errors - If the camera encoder hits an error mid-recording, the camera file is now finalized up to that point instead of being left unreadable.
  • Fixed a freeze during the macOS screen-recording permission check - A deadlock in the permission check could hang the app when starting a recording.

CLI API Keys, No-Mic Confirmation & macOS Memory Leak Fixes

This release adds API key authentication for the Cap CLI, a safety check that stops you from accidentally recording without a microphone, and a batch of fixes covering memory leaks on macOS, recordings that failed to open, and lighter instant recordings.

Features

  • API keys for the CLI - Generate API keys from your account settings on the Cap dashboard and set the CAP_API_KEY environment variable to authenticate the Cap CLI without a browser login. This makes it possible to run Cap in CI, on remote servers, and with agents in headless environments. You can list and revoke your keys from the dashboard at any time.
  • Confirm before recording without a microphone - Cap now asks for confirmation before starting a recording when no microphone is selected or the selected microphone is unavailable, so you never finish a take only to find it silent. It is on by default and can be turned off in Settings under General.
  • Exclude floating panels from recordings on macOS - The excluded-windows picker in Settings now lists floating accessory panels, like quick launchers and utility palettes, so you can keep them out of your recordings too.

Fixes

  • Recordings with a damaged mic track open again - A recording whose microphone audio file was empty or unreadable previously refused to open in the editor at all. The editor now opens the recording without the mic audio and logs a warning instead, and exports still validate audio strictly so a track is never silently dropped from a final file.
  • Memory growth while idle on macOS - Routine permission checks queried the display list every few seconds and leaked a small amount of memory each time, which could add up to significant usage over long sessions. This is fixed, along with smaller leaks in camera enumeration, display name and scale lookups, microphone device names, and the mic volume meter.
  • Recording start feedback - Clicking record from the target picker now shows a loading state immediately instead of appearing to do nothing while the recording starts.
  • Window screenshots on Windows - Taking a screenshot of a window no longer fails because the picker window closed itself before the capture was dispatched.
  • Editor playback with background music - Playback audio now works when your timeline has music but no recorded audio track.
  • Mic volume meter accuracy - The microphone level meter no longer stalls or grows memory when an audio device's capture clock freezes.

Performance

  • Lighter instant recordings on macOS - Instant recordings now capture at a size matched to the output resolution instead of the display's full Retina resolution, reducing CPU and memory use on high-density displays.
  • Faster camera preview during instant recordings - The camera preview streams frames in a more efficient format while instant recording, lowering preview overhead.

Live Transcription on the Share Page

Transcripts no longer wait for processing to finish. Instant recordings are now transcribed while they upload, so the share page has a transcript ready the moment it loads.

Features

  • Live transcript while uploading - Viewers who open a share link mid-upload see the transcript appear live as the recording is spoken, then hand off seamlessly to the final version.
  • Instant transcript at load - Landing on a finished Cap shows the transcript immediately instead of a processing spinner.
  • Live captions on the player - Captions are available on the share page player as soon as they exist, without restarting playback.
  • Transcript tab front and center - Landing on the share page right after stopping a recording opens the Transcript tab automatically.
