Changelog

New features, improvements, and fixes across the Cap desktop app, web, mobile, and browser extension.

Web

A New Docs Experience

The Cap docs have been redesigned from scratch, with clearer navigation, faster search, and answers on demand.

Features

  • New design - A cleaner layout with a proper sidebar, so guides for the desktop app, web, self-hosting, and the API are easy to find.
  • Ask the docs - Ask a question in plain language and get an answer grounded in the documentation, with links to the pages it came from.
  • Expanded guides - New documentation for storage setup, team migration, and using Cap with agents.
Web

Screenshots, Paste to Import, and More

Cap now handles screenshots as well as videos, and getting existing media into your library is much quicker.

Features

  • Screenshots on share pages - Screenshots captured with Cap get their own share pages and dashboard cards, just like videos.
  • Paste to import - Paste a file straight into the dashboard and Cap imports it into your library.
  • Import any media - The import flow accepts your existing videos and images, not just Loom links.
  • Record from Chrome - A new dashboard button starts a recording with the Cap Chrome extension if you have it installed.
Web

Better Download Options

Downloading a Cap is now a proper menu instead of a single button, on both the share page and the editor.

Features

  • Choose your quality - Pick between the processed video or the original recording at full quality.
  • Download from the editor - Grab a copy of the video without leaving the edit page.
  • Respects permissions - Download options only appear for viewers who are allowed to save the video.
Web

Playback Speed Controls

Playback speed is now a first-class setting. Viewers get a speed dial on the player, and owners can decide what speed a video starts at.

Features

  • Speed dial on the player - Viewers can switch playback speed directly from the share page and embeds.
  • Per-video default - Set a default playback speed for an individual Cap in its settings.
  • Organization default - Admins can set a default speed for every video in the organization.

Improvements

  • Links in comments - URLs pasted into comments are now clickable.
Web

Watch Caps Before the Upload Finishes

Share pages no longer wait for uploads. Instant recordings can be watched while the upload is still in progress, and viewers see a live preview even while you are still recording.

Features

  • Playback right after stopping - Open the share link the moment you stop recording and the video starts playing while the rest uploads in the background.
  • Live preview while recording - Anyone on the share page during an active recording sees the latest footage as it arrives.
  • Seamless handoff - When the upload completes, playback switches to the final video without interruption.
Web

Edit Caps in the Browser

You can now edit a Cap after recording it, right from the share page. Trim the start and end, split the video, and cut out the parts you do not want.

Features

  • Trim, split, and cut - Remove dead air and mistakes on a simple timeline, then save.
  • Rendered in the cloud - Edits are applied server-side, so the shared video updates for every viewer with no re-upload.
  • Draft recovery - Unsaved edits are kept in your browser so you can pick up where you left off.
Web

Bulk Loom Import

Migrating a whole team from Loom now takes one CSV. Export your library from Loom, upload the file, and Cap imports every video in the background.

Features

  • CSV import - Upload a Loom export CSV and Cap maps the columns, then imports each video with its title intact.
  • Runs in the background - Large libraries import over time, with progress you can check from the dashboard.
  • Keeps owners intact - Videos are assigned to the right teammates as they are imported.
Web

Google Drive Storage

Cap can now store your recordings in Google Drive. Connect Drive as a storage destination and new Caps upload straight into your own Drive, joining custom S3 buckets as a bring-your-own-storage option.

Features

  • Connect Google Drive - Link a Drive account and choose it as the destination for new recordings.
  • Organization-managed storage - A new storage page in organization settings lets admins set where the whole team's Caps are stored.
  • Share pages unchanged - Links, playback, and transcripts work the same wherever the video lives.
Web

Import Your Loom Videos

Moving from Loom no longer means leaving your library behind. Paste a Loom link and Cap imports the video into your account, ready to share from a Cap link.

Features

  • One-link import - Paste a Loom video URL and Cap downloads and re-hosts it for you.
  • Everything works - Imported videos get share pages, transcription, and analytics like any other Cap.
  • Free Loom downloader - A standalone tool on cap.so lets anyone download their Loom videos, no account required.
Web

Translated Captions

Captions are no longer stuck in the language you spoke. Viewers can translate captions on the share page player and watch in the language they prefer.

Features

  • Caption translation - Pick a language from the player and captions are translated automatically.
  • Context-aware output - Translations use the surrounding transcript for better phrasing than line-by-line conversion.
Web

One-Command Self-Hosting

Self-hosting Cap is now a single command. A new Docker Compose setup brings up the full web app, database, and storage in one go, with rewritten self-hosting docs to match.

Improvements

  • docker compose up - One command starts everything Cap needs to run on your own infrastructure.
  • Clearer docs - The self-hosting guide has been rewritten with the new setup, including configuration and upgrade notes.
Web

Cap Analytics

A full analytics dashboard for your Caps. See who is watching, where, and on what, instead of a single view count.

Features

  • Views over time - Charts of views across the last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or the lifetime of a video.
  • Audience breakdowns - Split views by country, browser, operating system, and device.
  • Compare videos - Drag videos side by side to compare how they perform.
  • Real-time tracking - New views appear in the dashboard as they happen.
Web

A New Web Recorder

The web recorder has been rebuilt from the ground up. It is faster, far more reliable, and a genuine option when you cannot install the desktop app or are on a lower-powered machine.

Features

  • Screen, window, tab, or camera - Choose exactly what to capture, with device pickers for camera and microphone.
  • Movable camera preview - Drag your camera bubble anywhere while you record, with picture-in-picture support.
  • Recording controls - A draggable in-progress bar keeps pause, resume, and stop within reach.

Improvements

  • Reliable uploads - Recordings upload in parts as you record, with automatic retries and live progress, so your share link is ready moments after you stop.
Web

Email Login Codes

Signing in with email now uses a one-time code instead of a magic link. Type the code from your inbox and you are in, with no link that opens in the wrong browser or gets eaten by a link scanner.

Web

Notifications

The dashboard now has a notifications inbox. See when someone views, comments on, replies to, or reacts to your Caps without leaving the app.

Features

  • Notification feed - Views, comments, replies, and reactions collected in one place.
  • Jump to the moment - Click a notification to open the video with the relevant comment at the top.
  • Read states - Notifications are marked as read when you open them.
Web

Folders

Your Cap library now has folders. Group recordings by project, customer, or topic instead of scrolling one long list.

Features

  • Create folders - Organize the Caps page into folders right from the dashboard.
  • Move Caps in - Add recordings to a folder and open it to browse them in place.
Web

Embed Caps Anywhere

Caps can now be embedded on any website. Grab the embed code from the share dialog and drop the player into docs, wikis, or your own pages.

Features

  • Embed code - The share dialog has a new tab with a ready-to-paste iframe snippet.
  • Clean player - Embeds show just the video player, sized to fit wherever you place it.
  • Copy or download transcripts - Transcripts on the share page can now be copied to the clipboard or downloaded as a file.
Web

Cap Spaces

Spaces are shared collections inside your organization. Create a space for a team or project, add the right people, and drop Caps into it for everyone to see.

Features

  • Create spaces - Set up as many spaces as you need from the dashboard sidebar.
  • Members - Add and remove organization members per space, so each space is visible to exactly the right people.
  • Shared libraries - Caps added to a space show up for every member of that space.
